Volleyball Canada has announced that Toronto will host the Canadian portion of the men’s World League volleyball tournament May 18-20 at the Ricoh Coliseum.

The World League will be part of an important and busy 2012 season for the Canadian squad, ranked 18th in the world, which is also looking to land a spot in the Olympic Games.  This is Canada’s first appearance in World League play since 2007.

The prestigious tournament, in its 23rd year, is a 16-country intercontinental tournament that takes place every summer, reaching all corners of the planet, offering worldwide TV coverage and the biggest cash prizes in the sport.

In Toronto, Canada will face its pool opponents Brazil, ranked number-one in the world, number-four Poland and number-27 Finland.  There will be two matches each of the three days (one in the afternoon and one in the evening) for a total of six matches.

The exact schedule and match times are still to be confirmed and ticket information will be available soon.

The World League event will be part of a massive volleyball celebration that week in Toronto.  The Canadian Open will be held from May 17-22 next door to the Ricoh Coliseum at the Direct Energy Centre with more than 10,000 players from 800 teams expected to compete, making it one of the largest amateur sports events in Canadian sports history.
